It is late evening in the dense Tiwas (Ougeinia dalbergiaoides) and Tendu (Diospyros melanoxylon) woods next to our camp. As the sun sets and the birds fly back while we drive our way back to the camp, we spot spots on the last bend before we approach the camp. A huge male leopard scurries into the bush from where darkness is absolute and the woods beyond are never-ending. With adrenaline surging through our bodies and our minds triumphant after the happenings of these few seconds, we return to the tranquil camp set deep inside the core. What to expect?

This four-safari experience takes you into the heart of Nagzira where there is an old and basic forest department rest house, a place where many of our most exciting tales from the wild originate! This rest house and the lush, wooded areas around it are home to a staggeringly healthy population of leopards, one of the best in the country and sightings of this dappled predator have been uncannily good these last few years. The mangroves and its many mysteries await you!

Please note: Each forest has its own set of rules for sightings. Sundarbans is a maze of forested islands which are crisscrossed by tidal water coming from the sea. There are two high tides and two low tides in a day at an interval of 6 hours each. The tide level & timings change every day. During the low tides, the mudflats get exposed and that is when we look for pugmarks. As the tide level (rise & fall of water) changes every day, there are certain periods (6-7 days stretch) in a month which are considered favorable for sightings. That period is locally called "Mora Kotal" or low tide times. The rise & fall is minimal during this period, and hence the water current too. This period falls almost mid-way between the new moon (Amavasya) and full moon (Purnima). During this period we get the maximum amount of time to explore the park with mudbanks exposed. Tigers, especially mothers with cubs below the age of 2 years prefer this time as well to cross big rivers, because of the lack of water current.

Jai may not be seen anymore, for none of us heard of him after the harsh summer of 2016, but his descendants sure do! These granite peaks of the Aravalli have provided a safe haven for the leopard, making it one of the best places to observe this charismatic cat.

Dotted with granite boulders, narrow ravines and caves, Bera is prime leopard habitat. A total absence of tigers has made the leopards of Bera unusually bold and flamboyant. Much of leopard activity is otherwise missed in India’s other forests due to predators and abundant tree cover.
